Set up payment process

1. Available payment methods on Digistore24

In general, we offer the following payment methods: single payments, installments and subscriptions. However, there are limitations that we will show below:

Customers from Germany and Austria

Single payments for customers from Germany and Austria are possible via:

  • PayPal
  • Sofortüberweisung
  • Advance payment
  • Credit card
  • Direct debit (only up to a limit of 500 €)

Installments and subscriptions for customers from Germany and Austria are only possible via:

  • PayPal
  • Credit card
  • Direct debit (only up to a limit of 500 €)
Direct Debit, PayPal and Credit Card Debit are the most popular payment methods.

Direct debit is the most popular payment method for customers from Germany. Please note that the upper limit for direct debits is 500 €. Direct debit is followed in popularity by the payment methods PayPal and credit card with shares of around 25-30% each.

Customers from abroad (except Austria – see above)

Single payments for customers from abroad are possible via:

  • PayPal
  • Advance payment
  • Sofortüberweisung
  • Credit card

Installments and subscriptions for customers from abroad are only possible via:

  • PayPal
  • Credit card

As you can see, direct debit is only possible for bank accounts from Germany and Austria!

For customers from countries where no direct debit is possible, there will be no direct debit payment option displayed on the order form. In order to pay by direct debit, your customers must have an account in Germany or Austria.

Exception: Example of a Swiss customer who has an account in Germany or Austria

If a customer from Switzerland calls up your order form, they will not be given the option for a direct debit payment. As described above, direct debit is not possible for customers from abroad.

However, if your customer has an account in Austria or Germany, they can use direct debit for this account. To do this, as a vendor you have to ask for the customer’s address on the order form. Your Swiss customer will then select Germany or Austria as the country, which makes direct debit possible.

Step-by-step guide: Ask for the customer’s address on the order form

Warning:

Changing the country of origin will also mean that the VAT rate changes, because this is dependent on the country of origin.

2. Determine payment method for your product

In the product details, you can determine which payments methods your customers can choose from.

Please note that direct debit is not available outside Germany and Austria. As a result, it is not offered as an option on the order form to customers from abroad, even if you have selected it as a payment method in the product details.

3. The different payment plans on Digistore24

You can set up single payments, installment payments and/or subscription payments (subscription) as payment plans on Digistore24. You can offer several payment plans (and several variants in addition) for a product on the order form.

  • Single payments
Here the entire product price is paid with a single payment.
  • Installment payments
The entire product price is not paid at once, but is paid in installments. You can individually determine the number of installments, the installment amount and the time intervals between the installments. In addition, you can offer multiple installment payment methods on an order form.
  • Subscription
  • In principle, this payment type has unlimited duration and can be canceled at any time. The customer still has access to the product until the period they have paid for is over i.e. when the next billing would occur. As with installment payments, you can also individually determine the number of installments, the installment amount and the time intervals between the installments.

Important: Please make sure you set up a payment plan for your subscription product as described in the next section. Otherwise, Digistore24 will create a default payment plan of 37 € gross for it.

4. Set up payment plans

The following first steps are the same for all three payment plans (single payment, installment payment and subscription payment (subscription)):

Step-by-step guide: The first steps for every payment plan

There is already a default payment plan!

Before you set up a new payment plan: Scroll down to the list of payment plans and delete the Digistore24 default payment plan by clicking on the X icon . Alternatively, you can edit the payment plan by clicking on the pencil icon .

Step-by-step guide: Set up single payments

Stop and restart recurring payments

As a vendor, you can automatically stop and restart the recurring payments i.e. subscription and installment payments, in the transaction details (under Reports > Transactions)

By default, the average price of your product will be listed on the marketplace.

Please note that if you have multiple payment plans and therefore multiple prices (installment payment products are generally more expensive), then you will see an average price on the marketplace if you have not entered a value at Price to display in the settings of your marketplace entry. To specify a sales price there, go to Marketplace > Edit marketplace entries in the vendor view, click on the pencil icon   of the relevant entry and activate the option Enter price manually.

5. Enter the correct price for your product on Digistore24

When you create payment plans, you can either specify net prices or gross prices.

Like in the image below, if you select net prices for Prices are…, your share and your affiliates' commissions are fixed. VAT will be incurred depending on the buyer country. Since different buyer countries have different VAT rates, customers pay different end prices depending on the buyer country.

If, on the other hand, you select gross prices as shown in the following image, then you have a fixed end price that is the same for all your customers, regardless of the buyer country or product type. Here it is your share and the commission of your affiliates that vary because the VAT rate is different and is deducted from the gross final amount before the commission is paid.

In the field Show VAT on order form, you can specify whether or not you want to show the VAT rate on your order form. If you select Yes, then the net price, the VAT amount and the gross final price will be displayed on the order form. If you select No, then the gross end price will be displayed on the order form with the remark “Price has VAT included where applicable”.

Note regarding net purchases:

In principle, the VAT is raised in accordance with the applicable EU law, in particular the new law that has been in force since 01.01.2015, which essentially means that the VAT of the EU buyer country must be paid to the respective EU buyer country. So, if you enter net prices, then a net price will be displayed, but VAT will also be displayed and charged. In cases where no VAT is payable, such as for buyers of digital products from non-EU countries, no VAT will be charged. If you have specified gross or net prices without an explicit statement regarding VAT on your order form, then the remark “Price has VAT included where applicable” will always appear. If the VAT amounts to 0 €, then this has also been done on a country-specific basis. This remark remains valid and is therefore displayed.
